Latest Events at Highclere Castle
As well as the excitement of having Downton Abbey filmed in their own home, Highclere Castle has the most amazing history in its own right.
It is said that the Black Prince came and hunted there in the time of Bishop William of Wykeham around 1376. Their current saloon was at that time a medieval dining hall with a long chamber, with rooms above and stables in the courtyard behind them. Unbelievably four hundred years later, Queen Caroline, the wife of George II, stayed there and the bedroom she slept in is still named after her, with private painting above the fireplace.
