B) Spend time working on this, as this is your future so you need to really find a style you are good at, enjoy and love creating.

Tip 2 – Create a buyer profile –

Detailing all the information you will need to design for them.

A) Who is your customer?

B) What market do they normally specialize in?

C) What is their look?

D) Who do they normally purchase through?

This will really help you when you start to design prints specifically targeted to them.

Tip 3 – Research Key Trends –

A) Research the latest trends for the sector you are wishing to design for, so your designs will be on point current and will fit the market.

This is the first thing you should do before you begin to design and patterns.

B)  Think about your motifs, elements and check the colours are correct for the season.

C) Check what is currently available for that sector in the stores right now, don’t copy what is available as they have already been designed and produced and buyers will not be interested in buying more of the same.

Get a real understanding of what you’re designing
You have to work out the details:
Ask yourself –
A) The sector you want to design for – Women’s Wear – Children’s Wear etc.
B) Which part of the sector are you designing for – Age group – Men/Women/Child –
C) Work out your color palette or set number of colours for your prints.
D) What will your pattern repeat be: half drop – full drop – tossed, etc.

Tip 5 – Find your competition –

Research other companies that sell designs for that sector.

A) View their work.

B) Check out the specific category in detail – you are wanting to design for – ie Floral – Women’s Wear.

C) Look at how they have used their motifs, the movement, the colour palette, the layout, how they have been created.

D) Ask yourself where you could fit into this sector?

E) What can you learn from them?
