5 Tips to Become a Surface Pattern Designer
1 – Passion – If you have decided you would like to become a surface print designer, perhaps you found an article in a magazine, online or through a friend when you know it’s what you want to do, it will feel like a lightning bolt strikes you, you suddenly get a smile on your face and the adrenaline rushes to your head……You have found a job that you want to do for the rest of your life. You will have to live and breath patterns, forevermore. This is passion.
2 – Determination – What makes you want to be a surface pattern designer – Perhaps you have trained as a graphic designer or an art student or totally want to teach yourself the art of surface design. You have to set aside time to teach your self the art of surface design, so be able to create a structured day – Buy a daily diary and set daily tasks and goals to reach throughout the day and work to the schedule, this way you will maximize results. This is determination.
A will to learn
3 – A will to learn – You will need to have strong willpower to decide on how you are going to learn the art of surface pattern design, should you enroll in an online college course or go to an independent textile design companies offering set courses. This is a will to learn.
A Strong Mind
4 – A Strong Mind – Be focused on each course as you go through the process. Throughout each course you will hopefully have mentors to help you with any queries on the course, you must have a strong mind and be able to accept when they critique your work and advise accordingly and offer help. This is a strong mind.
Able to work on your own
5 – Able to work on your own – Create a space in your home for a studio, an office or a section of your dining room, a seperate office or studio would be best, as you can go into the room and shut yourself off from the rest of the world while you work.
