The African Surface Pattern
Each week the surface pattern marketplace chooses a topic that is relevant or has recently been in the fashion or home interiors blogs or trend news.
African Textile Designs
This week they decided the challenge on a recent New York Fashion Show, exhibiting some amazing African textile patterns for women’s wear Fall 2019/ 2020.
History of African Prints
Manufacturers turned to West Africa where market women had taken a liking to the materials and even made better African patterns of the Cloth. With this discovery came the birth of Ankara. It was adopted and made popular by West Africa and based on this popularity, they are now able to look at Runways all over the world and see the inspiration for Ankara from Burberry, L.A.M.B, Marni to name a few. They are able to see the inspiration of the Ankara cloth everywhere. Women all over West Africa today wear Ankara casually. They are worn at weddings to identify friends of the bride and groom, at birthdays to identify family and friends of the celebrant and even at funerals to celebrate the departed.
The African Design Challenge
For this weeks challenge the designers were asked to design one or two patterns using the brief of African mash up following trends for women’s wear Fall 2019 / 2020. This weeks response has again been fabulous we have seen an amazing array of African prints, the designers have worked really hard to create some fantastic textile patterns using their own creative hand.
The Winner – Les Muses & Moi
Creative duo on stage and in the city, Corinne Prose and Stéphane Dehaumont, respectively Stylist and Artistic Director, combine their talent and imagination to merge marketing, fashion, and trend and give birth to new aspirational concepts. The Les Muses & Moi project is a free reinterpretation of classical works updated and reworked to lend themselves to collections of textile and decorative products.
The design was created by hand sketching the African gazelles and other African inspired motifs and then finished in photoshop. Les Muses & Moi has used a clever choice of colours from the brief and placed to create a half drop repeat pattern, the mixed African motifs really stand out well on the teal backgrounds, featured here on women’s dresses, umbrella, pumps, beach hat and beach towel and we could easily see this print on swimwear, children’s bedding, curtains and wallpaper.
