The Butterfly Challenge

Design challenge week eight. The surface pattern marketplace sends out a weekly design challenge to all creative designers that have joined their marketplace. The weekly design challenge is a great way to really test their skills and creativity. By accepting the challenge they then have to create a design in their own hand, giving their own interpretation of the challenge.

Butterfly Patterns in the 19th Century

1860’s women’s dresses featured tight bodices with high necks and buttoned fronts. White lace was popular for collars and cuffs, as were low sloping shoulders that flared out into wide sleeves. The skirt continued to be full and bell-shaped until around 1865 when it began to lose its volume at the front and move its emphasis towards the back. Hair was worn with a center parting tied into low chignons at the nape of the neck, with loops or ringlets covering the ears. Ornaments for evening wear included floral wreaths, ostrich feathers, pomegranate flowers, wheatears, and butterflies.

The Butterfly Challenge

This weeks challenge the designers were asked to design one or two patterns using the brief of Butterflies following trends for women’s wear Winter 19/20 trends. This week’s response has again been fabulous, and the designers have worked exceptionally hard to create some amazing on-trend patterns with butterfly influences.

Stella loves anything and everything that has design and beauty within it, which fortunately includes most things. She can spend her time deconstructing shapes, objects, art, and photographs just to reconstruct into a new image, color, texture or pattern. Living in Liverpool, United Kingdom. Stella has a wealth of creative resources and amazing culture all around her wherever she goes… it’s truly inspirational, but saying that, she also may find something just as interesting to digitally manipulate in a stack of folded washing… the trick is to see what it is you’re looking at, then enjoy the art of your design journey. She loves art… she wears art and lives and lives art through her everyday life.
