Abigayle Mackie is a British textile and surface designer who has a fresh eye to print design. Currently based in the southwest, her designs derive from beautiful hand drawing, painting, and collage. Inspired by the likes of William Morris, Picasso, Cole & Son, and Mary Katranzou, her interests span from interiors and homewares, right across to fashion and installation art. Her prints are often inspired by organic form and the natural world, and when drawn and documented, they become unique and abstracted. Upcycling the old into new by creating exciting hand-rendered patterns is central to her practice. Her more personal work is inspired by the Japanese model; embracing traditional design and processes, but simultaneously exploring new technologies and processes. When it comes to more commercial work and print design, Abigayle is not defined by a set style, giving her the ability to deliver a more varied portfolio of designs.
From a young age, Abigayle has had an eye for beautiful things and a huge amount of creativity. Going up into secondary school, she received an art scholarship and lots of recognition throughout her younger educational years. After studying photography, art & print design textiles at college, she applied to university. Her first year of studying took place at Winchester School of Art where she specialized in textile print design for fashion and Interiors. A country girl at heart, Abigayle deferred for a year, traveled in Thailand, and afterward spent time riding and working with racehorses in Devon. Her surroundings here in the countryside inspired much of her second year of university work, in which time she was shortlisted for the ‘My Country Business’ Awards.
Thailand provided fresh inspiration for her, and the year out gave her the headspace to go back to university, at a location that was closer to home. Accredited by Plymouth University, Abigayle’s strong abilities in print design, textile and surface design, achieved her a first-class BA (Hons) degree. Since then Abigayle has exhibited at New Designers, interned with JRC Print Studio’s, and freelanced for Rapture & Wright in the Cotswolds.
At present Abigayle is a women’s wear print designer for a London Company, but will soon be moving back to the South West to Focus on her own print design work, as well as freelancing. View more designs.
