The Abstract Mash-Up Challenge

Design challenge week Seven. The surface pattern marketplace sends out a weekly design challenge to all creative designers that have joined their marketplace. The weekly design challenge is a great way to really test their skills and creativity. By accepting the challenge they then have to create a design in their own hand, giving their own interpretation of the challenge.

The Abstract Mashup Pattern

Each week the surface pattern marketplace chooses a topic that is relevant or has recently been in the fashion or home interiors blogs or trend news.

Abstract Geometric Design

This week they decided the challenge on a recent Milan Fashion Show, exhibiting some amazing abstract mash-up patterns for women’s wear S/S 2020 Season.

Abstract Patterns in the Twentieth Century

The way people dressed was an obvious sign of shifting attitudes. In the 1960s, many chose, very publicly, to start looking different from the norm. Innovative designers and more informal modes of shopping drew a dividing line between the generations, creating a new market for youth fashion. Our collection tracks the different aspects of this fast-accelerating style revolution, with striking pieces from many of the decade’s most influential designers. Biba and Mary Quant were two of the first designers to print patterns on their dresses for women who wanted to be seen to be hip and with the trend of the new 60’s bold and influential looks.

The Abstract Mash-Up Challenge

This weeks challenge the designers were asked to design one or two patterns using the brief of Abstract Mashup following trends for women’s apparel S/S 2020. This week’s response has again been amazing, and the designers have really worked hard to create some stunning patterns with abstract, geometric and striped influences.

The Winner

Daniela is a surface pattern and textile designer based in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. She designs mainly by sketching and painting for textile print and pattern, mainly to fashion trends. Her favorite techniques are watercolor, ink, and pencil, but she also works with digital interventions and mixed media. Daniela graduated in fashion design in Brazil and studied print and pattern design in Barcelona, Spain. She has worked as a freelance designer for the fashion industry for six years. And, she has been creating her own collection of designs for stationery and home decor.

Daniela has produced an amazing design, utilizing all the colors supplied the brief and produced a really fabulous pattern suitable for women’s wear 2020 Season. The design incorporates elements of abstracts, geometrics and striped sections that really work together.

Although the challenge was for S/S 2020 Women’s Wear, this design is so adaptable you could easily see it on home interior soft furnishings, wallpaper, rugs, and even crockery.
